The social network Instagram* now ventures into television platforms. Today, Instagram for TV was unveiled, specifically designed for large screens with landscape orientation. The corresponding app has been available for testing in the U.S. on Amazon Fire TV devices since yesterday. The company noted that in the coming months, the app will be available on more devices and in other regions.
Currently, the app allows users to add up to five accounts or create a separate account exclusively for watching shows. Videos are organized into separate channels according to user interests. There is a search function, and more features will be added in the future: using a phone as a remote control, sharing feeds, and improved navigation.
Meta’s latest foray into TV brings a slew of updates aimed at enhancing user experience and reach. The inclusion of a multi-account feature aligns with user demands for greater flexibility. Furthermore, the anticipated addition of remote control capability using smartphones signifies a move towards integrated device ecosystems.
While Instagram is leading this charge, it joins a growing list of digital platforms embracing the smart TV space, notably TikTok and YouTube. Both offer TV apps, catering especially to younger demographics who increasingly consume content on larger screens. Each platform’s offering reflects its core strengths: YouTube with comprehensive video libraries and personalized recommendations, TikTok focusing on short, viral content adapted for TV viewing.
