India Demands Cleanup as Musk’s Platform Faces AI Scandal

The Indian government has demanded changes from Elon Musk’s platform, X, regarding its AI chatbot Grok due to the generation of obscene content. The Ministry of Information Technology in India has given the platform 72 hours to address these violations. The trigger for this demand came from user complaints and members of parliament regarding instances where Grok was used to create explicit images, including generated and altered images of women.

The Ministry requested X to take measures to limit the generation of content containing “nudity, sexualization, sexually explicit material, or other illegal materials.” Within 72 hours, X must provide a report on the measures undertaken to prevent the posting and dissemination of such content. Authorities warned that failure to comply could jeopardize the platform’s legal protection.

Indian Parliament member Priyanka Chaturvedi filed an official complaint, highlighting examples where Grok was used to modify images of individuals, primarily women, to appear as if they were dressed in bikinis. She urged companies developing AI chatbots to establish limits so these tools do not violate human dignity. Users also reported instances of generating sexualized images involving minors.

X acknowledged the problem, stating it had removed the generated images and urged users to report such cases to the FBI or NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children). The Ministry of Information Technology of India reminded that compliance with local laws regulating obscene and explicitly sexual content is a mandatory condition for maintaining legal immunity from liability for user-generated materials. Authorities warned companies to improve precautionary measures, stating that legal action might be taken otherwise. India remains one of the largest digital markets.

Recently, India has been reinforcing its stance on digital content and AI technology regulations, reflecting its growing influence as a global digital powerhouse. These actions signify India’s proactive approach to enforcing content regulations while balancing technological advancements and local cultural norms.
