In a timely interview with People’s Daily, Huawei’s founder, Ren Zhengfei, shared insights during critical trade talks between the U.S. and China. Ren highlighted Huawei’s ability to produce advanced chips despite stringent sanctions, acknowledging a technological gap with Western competitors but expressing determination to bridge it.
Surprisingly candid, Ren Zhengfei admitted that Huawei lags behind Western technology, though he believes the U.S. overestimates the company’s capabilities. As reported by Reuters, he remarked, “Huawei is not as advanced as perceived. We need hard work to reach expected levels.” This gap, he explained, forces Huawei to innovate by combining physics, mathematics, and bypassing Moore’s Law to achieve significant technological advancements.
Huawei has patented chip packaging technologies that aim to match Western performance standards. Ren highlighted software development as a key area where China has inherent advantages, including a large pool of young developers and robust infrastructure. These factors position China to leverage open-source programs to meet its societal needs effectively.
Ren emphasized that despite U.S. focus on Huawei, China has a wealth of capable chip developers. Huawei invests $25 billion annually in research and development, aiming to develop competitive multi-chip designs even under sanctions. This dedication underscores Huawei’s strategy to remain at the forefront of technology despite external pressures.
