Huawei Mate 80: The Underdog Leading the Flagship Race

Prominent Chinese insider Digital Chat Station has reported that the standard Huawei Mate 80 has reached 1.5 million activations. This achievement has allowed the smartphone to surpass all other Chinese flagship models in sales, becoming the most successful new flagship in the Chinese market by the end of 2025. Interestingly, the bulk of sales have come from the base Mate 80. The higher-end versions-Mate 80 Pro, Pro Max, and RS-are demonstrating average performance compared to the standard model. In fact, it is the standard version that is ‘pulling’ the entire lineup and shaping its commercial success. Photo Huawei Yet, Pro models are still in mass shortage. In many sales channels, customers have to register in queues, participate in lotteries, or wait for supplies for weeks. On the secondary market, reseller prices significantly exceed the official ones. Previously, Digital Chat Station was the first to accurately report the specifications of Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro, as well as the fact that the Realme GT 7 Pro will receive a bright Samsung screen and that the Dimensity 9400 SoC will be released earlier than the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Consumer Trends Favoring the Base Model

The impressive performance of the Huawei Mate 80 base model could be attributed to several factors. One key reason is the attractive price point, making it accessible to a wider audience who might be more price-sensitive. The standard model offers a well-rounded feature set that meets the needs of most consumers without the premium price tag of the Pro models. Additionally, there seems to be a growing trend where consumers prioritize practicality and core features over additional bells and whistles offered by higher-end models.

Impact of Pro Model Shortages

The shortage of Huawei Mate 80 Pro models is contributing to increased demand and prices in the secondary market. This scarcity creates an opportunity for resellers to command significantly higher prices, often making it a risky purchase for consumers hoping to snag a Pro model. The ongoing shortages may also drive potential buyers towards the standard version, further boosting its already impressive sales numbers.

Recent Updates from Digital Chat Station

Digital Chat Station has continued to provide insights into the dynamics of the smartphone market. Recently in December 2025 and early 2026, there have been tantalizing hints about new releases and upgrades, including the anticipation of new SoC technologies and display innovations that could set the stage for competitive advancements in the industry.
