The creator of the PhoneBuff channel conducted an extensive comparison of six generations of Apple smartphones-from the iPhone 12 Pro Max to the iPhone 17 Pro Max-using robotic manipulators that carried out identical tasks on each device.

The test suite included capturing and processing photos, launching apps and games, as well as working with image and video editors-typical scenarios that mimic the everyday usage load on a smartphone. The author aimed to evaluate the real performance gains across different device generations over several years. The experiment showed that performance progress has become less linear. In specific stages, the iPhone 13 Pro Max delivered results close to more recent models, highlighting a slowdown in power growth in the latest generations. Nonetheless, the iPhone 17 Pro Max completed the test first, outpacing predecessors by a significant margin and confirming its status as the fastest device in the lineup.
Recently, new technological advancements such as improvements in AI processing and machine learning capabilities have further enhanced the efficiency of newer models. Apple’s focus now on software optimizations plays a crucial role in its flagship devices, illustrating a shift from sheer hardware prowess to more nuanced software improvements. The latest iOS updates have further refined battery life management and multi-tasking efficiencies, even on older models, keeping them competent in regular use.
