Honor Takes on Xiaomi with Cutting-Edge 200 MP Periscope Camera

According to supply chain sources, China has already begun testing a periscope camera with a “domestic” 200 MP sensor featuring an optical format of 1/1.28 inches. It is highly likely that this module will first appear in the upcoming flagship from Honor, and not Xiaomi, contrary to earlier rumors.

Renowned insider Digital Chat Station shared this information, claiming that the 200-megapixel “periscope” is in an active testing phase. Discussions around the leak suggest that the smartphone prototype belongs to Honor, and the brand might be one of the first to commercialize this technology in the “ultra-flagship” segment.

From a technical standpoint, the combination of a large 1/1.28-inch sensor and periscope optics is seen as a compromise between aperture, zoom capabilities, and body thickness. Significant improvement in image quality at long focal lengths, especially in low-light conditions, is expected.

Resource Xiaomitime notes the growing role of Chinese sensor suppliers in the telephoto direction. According to leaks, several 200-megapixel sensors with a pixel size of 0.61 microns and the same 1/1.28-inch format are in development by smartphone manufacturers, including SmartSens SCC80XS and OmniVision OV52A/OV52B-which are both designed with a periscope module in mind.

Previously, Digital Chat Station was the first to accurately report specifications for the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro, as well as Realme GT 7 Pro featuring a vibrant Samsung display and the Dimensity 9400 SoC launching sooner than Snapdragon 8 Elite.
