Google Tightens Grip on Energy-Guzzling Apps in Play Store Overhaul

Google has updated the technical requirements for app quality in the Play Store, introducing a separate section dedicated to energy consumption. Central to the new guidelines is the regulation of so-called wake locks. This mechanism enables an app to keep a device active even when the screen is off, necessary for background tasks like music playback or long downloads. However, improper use makes it a leading cause of excessive battery drain. Effective March 1, 2026, apps that prevent a device from entering ‘sleep’ without a justified reason may face sanctions on the platform. Google explicitly states: such programs risk losing visibility in recommendations and other prominent Play Store sections. Additionally, on the violating app’s Play Store page, a special label will be displayed. This label will alert users that the app may rapidly deplete the device’s battery life.

The new system is part of the ‘core technical quality metrics’ that the Play Store already uses to evaluate apps. Current metrics include the frequency of crashes and freezes. Google also specifies particular thresholds. For smartphones, an app will be considered problematic if it keeps the device active for more than two hours cumulatively within a 24-hour period without adequate cause. The metric for wearables is already in effect: an app receives a high energy consumption label if, during active sessions, it uses more than 4.44% of battery power per hour. Exceeding these values increases the risk of reduced visibility in the store and the appearance of public warnings.

The company highlights that the new energy consumption indicator was developed in collaboration with Samsung. This indicates an effort to harmonize battery performance standards among key Android ecosystem players, aiming to make requirements more uniform for device manufacturers and app developers.
