Google Maps Talks the Walk: Gemini Expands Its Guidance

Google has expanded the functionality of the AI-powered Gemini during navigation in Google Maps. In November 2025, Google enabled the use of Gemini while driving. Now, conversing with the Gemini chatbot in Google Maps is accessible for walking and cycling.

For example, you can ask, “What neighborhood am I in right now?” or “What popular restaurants are nearby?” Cyclists have access to a voice control feature that allows them to check arrival time or send a message without taking their eyes off the road or their hands off the handlebars. Users can inquire about the estimated time of arrival or request to alert a colleague about a delay via text message.

The update has already begun rolling out in the Google Maps mobile app on iOS and Android for users in regions where Gemini operates. To activate the mode, say “Okay, Google,” or tap the Gemini icon in navigation mode.

Recent feedback from users highlights the increased safety and convenience offered by the hands-free capabilities of Gemini, especially for cyclists navigating busy urban environments. Tech analysts have noted that the integration of AI into everyday navigation not only streamlines the user experience but also sets a new benchmark for digital mapping services.

Moving forward, Google plans to further enhance the interactive features of Gemini, aiming to include personalized recommendations based on user preferences and real-time traffic conditions, which could effectively redefine on-the-go navigation.
