Germany’s Energy Future: Unveiling Europe’s Largest Battery Storage Project

Germany has begun preparations for constructing the largest energy storage system in Europe, based on battery technology. The GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 installation is set to have a capacity of 1 GW (4 GWh).

Photo Fluence Energy

The project will be undertaken by LEAG Clean Power GmbH and Fluence Energy, and it will be located in Jänschwalde. The system will utilize Fluence’s Smartstack technology-the latest solution by LEAG for large-scale energy storage. SmartStack is a modular system with energy storage capacity up to 7.5 MWh. It is delivered in two parts and assembled on site, which, according to the company, simplifies transportation logistics despite the finished product being slightly longer and substantially taller than the standard 20-foot ISO container configuration used across most industries.

Once construction is completed, the facility will play a key role in stabilizing Germany’s energy system. The installation will be part of the GigawattFactory-a collection of low-carbon power generation, storage, and hydrogen assets that LEAG is developing and operating. It includes solar and wind power plants, BESS, ‘green’ hydrogen, and hydrogen-ready thermal power stations.

LEAG and Fluence aim to address the challenges of integrating renewable energy into the grid, providing resilience and reliability to the fluctuating supply from wind and solar sources. Industry experts highlight the importance of such projects in achieving Europe’s ambitious climate goals. The GigaBattery Jänschwalde will not only support Germany’s transition to renewable energy but also serve as a model for similar initiatives across Europe.
