Geely’s Bold Leap in Battery Tech Propels Industry Towards Future

Geely Automobile Group’s CEO Gan Jiayue has announced that by 2026, Geely’s proprietary solid-state batteries will complete their first production phase and undergo testing in real vehicles. This marks a significant milestone in automotive technology as solid-state batteries are known for their potential to increase vehicle range and improve safety due to their non-flammable nature compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Geely is strategically employing a “multi-pronged approach,” developing technologies like the hybrid Thor AI engine, the super hybrid SEA technology, and the Shield Brick battery, while consistently advancing the industrialization of both semi-solid and solid-state batteries.

According to reports, Geely Holding’s total sales reached 4.116 million vehicles in 2025, a robust 26% increase from the previous year, reflecting five consecutive years of rapid growth. Notably, sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) soared to 2.293 million units, marking a 58% year-on-year jump, with NEVs now making up 56% of total sales. For the first time, the group’s sales surpassed 4 million vehicles, lifting it to seventh place in the global sales rankings.

Taking a look at the broader market, Geely is not alone in this technological race. Tesla has been a leader in advocating for battery innovation, recently investing heavily in 4680 battery cells, which are also expected to enhance efficiency and range. Meanwhile, Toyota is exploring solid-state batteries with plans to integrate them into commercial vehicles by the late 2020s, aligning with the steady climb towards a fully electrified future.

“The adoption of solid-state batteries is a game-changer, not only for efficiency but also for safety standards. The automotive industry is on the brink of a significant transformation,” says an insider from the electric vehicle sector.

As the realm of electric vehicles continues to expand, with predictions estimating EVs will constitute a major share of global auto sales by 2030, companies like Geely are paving the way for sustainable and innovative automotive solutions.
