Fujifilm’s New LTO Ultrium 10 Tapes: Unveiling a Data Storage Overhaul

Fujifilm has launched a new generation of LTO Ultrium cartridges, unveiled in November. The model LTO Ultrium 10 has a capacity of 40 TB. These magnetic media are intended for cold data storage and archiving. The previous generation of Fujifilm cartridges offered 30 TB, so the increase is quite substantial. Additionally, thanks to data compression features, up to 100 TB can be recorded on the cartridge.

The novelty supports a maximum data transfer rate of 400 MB/s in native mode and up to 1000 MB/s when compressed, and includes an internal EEPROM memory with an electromagnetic induction antenna of 32 kB. The tape width is 12.65 mm, thickness is 4.0 µm, and length is 1337 m. Fujifilm achieved the volume increase through improved magnetic particle technology and a thinner film construction.

Industry experts are praising the advancements in magnetic storage technology that Fujifilm has incorporated. The utilization of an enhanced electromagnetic induction antenna is seen as a pioneering move, potentially setting a new standard in the industry. Commentators predict that the demand for these cartridges will rise as data center capacities expand globally, especially within sectors like scientific computing and cloud services. As the pressure to store ever-growing amounts of data increases, innovations like this provide exciting solutions.

Despite the burgeoning capabilities of solid-state drives, magnetic tape remains a favorite for archival purposes due to its reliability and cost-effectiveness. Looking ahead, storage technologies are expected to evolve towards even larger capacities and faster transfer rates, keeping pace with global digital growth.
