The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into complaints regarding Ford F-150 pickups, focusing on approximately 1.27 million vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2017.
Preliminary findings indicate the malfunction is due to wear on electrical connections within the so-called conductive transmission frame. Under high temperatures and vibration, these connections degrade, causing speed sensor signal loss. NHTSA experts also detected another critical scenario: when reversing uphill, the gearbox might suddenly switch to ‘neutral,’ causing the heavy truck to roll forward.
Many owners attempted self-funded solutions, replacing valve bodies or wiring components, yet defects often reoccurred. Ford asserts that this situation differs from past recalls concerning older models. If federal engineers confirm a structural defect compromising safety, Ford must undertake one of the most extensive and costly recalls in its history.
Experts suggest that Ford’s robust electric vehicle segment and recent positive quarterly earnings might buffer the company from immediate negative financial impacts. However, a recall affecting over a million vehicles could persist as a strategic issue for Ford, diverting resources and impacting brand perception despite current financial health.
