Elon Musk and Grok’s Daring Adventure in AI Censorship

Scandal with ‘nude art’ in Grok continues: users face photo editing restrictions

Elon Musk explained which content should be permissible for the Grok chatbot when NSFW (Not Safe For Work) mode is enabled. In this mode, the chatbot allows the creation of adult, erotic, sexual, and explicit content with minimal censorship. According to him, the system can permit the display of nude upper bodies of imaginary adult individuals but not of real persons. Musk noted that this level of permissibility aligns with what is typically seen in R-rated movies available, for example, on Apple TV’s catalog. Musk emphasized that the content involves fictional characters and strictly adheres to cultural and legal norms. He believes this approach reflects the unwritten standard developed in the USA for age-restricted content.

Experiments showed Grok allows creating fully nude people, with rectangles manually applied post-image creation.

However, these rules won’t be universal worldwide. Musk pointed out that other countries may have different requirements for such content, determined by local laws. Thus, Grok must adapt to each specific jurisdiction’s norms rather than operate under a unified global template.

Recently, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer mentioned that authorities should ‘consider all options,’ including the potential ban of the X platform. The UK also conducted discussions with Canada and Australia about possibly prohibiting Elon Musk’s social network. This reflects a growing international debate on regulating AI tools, stressing how global perspectives differ on issues of digital content governance. Meanwhile, recent reports show that digital platforms, particularly those involving AI, are under increased scrutiny as they continue to evolve and challenge existing legal frameworks.
