Samsung’s new and ambitious Galaxy Z TriFold, which went on sale in the U.S. on January 30, 2026, for a premium price of $2900, is already facing scrutiny over its durability. Just weeks after a launch that saw high demand, some early buyers are reporting significant problems with the device’s main 10-inch folding display, raising concerns about the reliability of the first-generation triple-folding screen technology.
Multiple reports have surfaced on platforms like Reddit, describing alarming screen failures. One user detailed an incident where their TriFold’s inner display suddenly flashed green before going black and becoming unresponsive. While a reboot temporarily fixed it, the problem reportedly returned and persisted. Another owner described their device’s screen registering phantom touches just five days after purchase, followed by the display turning completely white and non-responsive by the next day. This user also noted a faint popping or clicking sound during folding and what appeared to be a small air bubble under the screen. In both cases, the owners claimed their devices were not dropped or subjected to unusual stress.
These early complaints are reminiscent of the troubled launch of the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, which Samsung had to postpone after review units failed. While Samsung has made significant strides in the durability of its foldable devices since then, the move to a more complex tri-fold design introduces new potential points of failure. The larger, more intricate screen and dual-hinge mechanism inherently increase the mechanical stress on the components, which could be a factor in these initial reports.
At this stage, it is difficult to determine whether these are isolated manufacturing defects or early signs of a more widespread design or hardware issue. However, for a device commanding a nearly $3,000 price tag, such reports are a cause for concern for both consumers and the manufacturer.
Samsung has long been the dominant force in the foldable market, but the competitive landscape is intensifying. Competitors like Google, Motorola, and OnePlus have introduced compelling alternatives, steadily gaining traction. A problematic launch for a halo device like the TriFold could tarnish Samsung’s reputation as a leader in foldable innovation and open the door for rivals to capture market share. The foldable market is still a niche but growing segment, and consumer confidence is paramount for its expansion.
Samsung has not yet issued an official statement regarding these user reports. The company’s next steps will be critical. A swift and transparent response, whether through a formal investigation, a replacement program for affected units, or a software update if the issue is not hardware-related, will be essential to maintain customer trust. The handling of these early issues will not only determine the fate of the Galaxy Z TriFold but could also influence the broader public perception of the entire next generation of multi-folding devices.
