DDR5 Prices Skyrocket, Outpacing Even the Latest Gaming Consoles

The prices of RAM are continuing to grow significantly. Even in the past few days, they have risen noticeably, and the trend persists. Currently, prices have reached a curious psychological benchmark. A kit consisting of two DDR5 modules with a total capacity of 64GB can now cost approximately as much as a PlayStation 5 Pro. Tom’s Hardware cites, for example, a G.Skill’s Trident Z5 Neo 6000 MT/s 64GB kit, which in the USA now costs $600, even considering a modest $40 discount. For comparison, the PS5 Pro also on discount costs $650.

This same kit only cost $205 to $220 until mid-October, meaning it has tripled in price. Looking at European prices, the situation is similar. For example, the Corsair Vengeance RGB 64GB Kit DDR5-6000 now costs around 550 EUR ($600), whereas just four days ago it was 450 EUR ($491), not to mention the 320 EUR ($349) a month ago and 240 EUR ($262) in September. 64GB kits in Europe range from 350 EUR ($382) to 700 EUR ($763), but there are more expensive options, and these aren’t highly overclocked modules. Thus, 64GB of RAM is priced close to a PS5 Pro, and a more modest 32GB kit can be bought for 250 EUR ($273) to 350 EUR ($382), which falls short of the base PS5.

Recent increases in DDR5 prices can be attributed to ongoing supply chain disruptions and heightened demand driven by new processors supporting DDR5, like the Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs. Furthermore, rising production costs, especially in semiconductors, have contributed to this price hike.
