Dasung Link offers a rather unconventional approach to enhancing the capabilities of an ordinary smartphone by utilizing an e-ink screen. Beijing-based Dasung Technology has unveiled an updated version of the Link device, which essentially functions as an external 6.7-inch E-Ink display for real-time mirroring of a phone screen. It is crucial to understand that Link is neither a smartphone nor a “smart” device. Inside, there is no processor, cameras, or its own operating system. It’s simply a screen with a battery that entirely relies on the smartphone to which it is connected. All data processing, interface, and performance come from the phone, while Link merely displays the image in electronic ink format.
The main innovation is Dasung’s proprietary technology with a 60Hz refresh rate for E-Ink screens. For electronic ink displays, this sounds almost fantastic: they are usually designed for static content, and any animation appears jerky. The company claims that the new Link handles smooth scrolling and even video playback while maintaining the key advantages of E-Ink-no backlighting and minimal eye strain. The display itself measures 6.7 inches and boasts 300 PPI density. It does not emit light but reflects what surrounds it, creating a “paper-like” image effect. Dasung emphasizes that Link should be perceived precisely as an external display for a smartphone, rather than a standalone gadget. Sales commence on January 5.
