China continues to bolster its communications satellite fleet. The CASC Corporation announced the successful launch of another group, marking the 17th batch of low-Earth orbit SatNet satellites. The launch took place on December 26th from the commercial site of the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site, Hainan Province, with all units placed accurately into designated orbits.
The mission utilized the CZ-8A launch vehicle, which took off at 07:26 Beijing time. This launch represents the 620th mission for this rocket series. The CZ-8A is a two-stage hydrogen-oxygen fueled carrier with enhanced dimensions and a modernized design. It can deliver up to 9.8 tons to low Earth orbit and up to 3.5 tons to geotransfer orbit.
Compared to the basic CZ-8, the new version features an updated first stage and an enlarged second stage with a YF-75H engine, developed using technologies applied in the heavy CZ-5. This is the sixth launch for the CZ-8A, all occurring in 2025.
China is vigorously advancing its national space program, expanding satellite networks, supporting its own orbital station, and implementing projects for exploring the Moon, Mars, and asteroids. Recent developments have underscored China’s commitment to becoming a leading force in the space industry.
The ambitious push in the space arena is not just about technological advancement or economic growth. It also reflects China’s geopolitical aspirations to solidify its influence globally. These satellite launches enable China to enhance its capabilities in areas like reconnaissance, navigation, and telecommunication, providing a strategic edge over competitors.
Since its introduction, the CZ-8A has continued to evolve. While details remain closely held, industry experts suggest improvements focus on increased payload efficiency and lowered launch costs, aligning with global competitive practices in satellite deployment. By building upon existing technologies with innovative tweaks, China is positioning the CZ-8A to meet future demands efficiently.
