China has brought two Hualong One reactors into operation. The first phase of construction is complete, with the Zhangzhou station transitioning from construction to operation, marking a pivotal development in China’s third-generation nuclear energy sector.
Hualong One is a Chinese pressurized water reactor of the third generation. It has received certification in line with European EUR requirements and a safety assessment in the UK. Following the commissioning of both units, the plant has officially moved from construction to operational status. On January 1, at 00:07, the second unit completed a 168-hour continuous full-power test, overcoming the final regulatory hurdle needed for commercial operation. The test confirmed the reactor’s stability and safety during sustained maximum power operations.
The reactor’s design is central to China’s strategy for reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and strengthening its position in the global nuclear sector. With the two operational units expected to produce around 20 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, officials say it will cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 16 million tons per year, equating to replacing over 6 million tons of standard coal.
Chinese media report that Hualong One is currently the third-generation nuclear technology with the most reactors either operating or under construction worldwide. The launch of the Zhangzhou plant is seen as the start of a large-scale Hualong One rollout. Upon completion, the site will host six reactors, making it the world’s largest nuclear power station focused on one type of domestically-developed reactor. Once all six units are complete, the plant is set to supply about 60 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
The deployment of the Hualong One reactors is expected to not only enhance China’s domestic energy capabilities but also bolster its role as a leader in international nuclear technology. With advancing research and development in nuclear safety and sustainability, Hualong One could potentially influence global energy policies.
Experts highlight Hualong One’s adherence to international safety standards as a significant achievement, potentially opening more markets for China’s nuclear technology exports. As countries worldwide seek cleaner energy sources, China’s advancement in nuclear technology offers a critical alternative.
