China Launches Asia’s Largest Car Carrier with Green Twist

In China, the largest car carrier in the country’s history has been launched. According to CCTV News, the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has taken the roll-on/roll-off ship, designed to carry 10,800 vehicles and equipped with a dual-fuel power plant (liquefied natural gas/diesel), out of dry dock. The vessel is built for the South Korean shipping company HMM.

The length of the vessel is 230 meters (755 feet), the width is 40 meters (131 feet), and the design draft is 10.5 meters (34 feet). The car carrier has 14 decks for accommodating equipment, including five movable ones, allowing the transport of a wide range of cargo – from passenger cars to electric vehicles, hydrogen cars, and heavy-duty trucks. The maximum capacity is 10,800 vehicles.

Emerging Trends in LNG-Powered Vessels

According to late 2025 data, LNG-powered vessels are seeing increased adoption due to stricter environmental regulations and the need for cleaner fuels. The numbers have been growing as more companies prioritize environmental sustainability in shipping practices. This trend is evident in the construction of new vessels, such as the one launched by GSI, which highlights a significant shift towards greener maritime solutions.
