ChatGPT Joins the Chat: A New Era of Conversational Collaboration

OpenAI has launched a pilot test of group chats in ChatGPT. Similar to group chats in messaging apps, ChatGPT allows communication with friends, family, or colleagues, with the chatbot as one of the participants. It assists in planning vacation itineraries, suggesting renovation ideas, or finding a restaurant that suits everyone in the conversation.

This feature can also be used for collaborative work. For instance, ChatGPT can generate reports based on articles and notes added by chat participants. Responses are powered by GPT 5.1 Auto, tracking the flow of conversation to know when to remain silent or respond. Participants can specifically summon the chatbot by mentioning “ChatGPT.”

Group chats are now available in several regions on mobile devices and the web version, including non-paid subscription users. A group chat can include up to 20 participants. If any participant is under 18, the chatbot automatically implements age restrictions on content for all.
