Caterpillar Embraces AI: Beyond Cloud, Into Machines

Caterpillar unveiled a comprehensive strategy for incorporating Cat AI into its machines, software, and production processes at the CES 2026 exhibition. The company bets on AI systems working directly on equipment and in industrial settings, bypassing constant cloud reliance. As part of this initiative, Caterpillar has expanded its collaboration with Nvidia, which will provide computational platforms and software. Cat AI will operate directly on equipment using the Nvidia Jetson Thor platform, enabling real-time sensor data processing in construction, mining, and energy machinery.

Caterpillar is also introducing AI functions in operator cabins, offering personalized productivity data, performance recommendations, and safety alerts.

In addition, Caterpillar has launched Cat AI Assistant, integrated into digital platforms and onboard systems. The voice-controlled assistant provides operation, maintenance, parts, and troubleshooting information. Operators can use voice commands to adjust settings, diagnose issues, and connect to applications without disrupting their workflow. The system uses Nvidia’s Riva speech recognition models and leverages the Helios unified data platform to ensure accuracy of recommendations.

Moreover, Cat AI extends to manufacturing and logistics operations. Caterpillar utilizes AI for prediction, planning, and production management through the Nvidia-based AI Factory infrastructure. The company is also creating digital twins of its factories using Nvidia Omniverse tools and OpenUSD standards, allowing for simulation of manufacturing processes before making physical changes. In the future, Caterpillar plans to integrate machines, sites, plants, and supply chains into a single intelligent system.
