Can Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s Camera Innovation Outperform Competitors?

Rumors that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra would abandon dual telephoto lenses in favor of a single advanced module had been circulating for some time, yet the principle of its operation remained a mystery. Now, thanks to leaked screenshots of the camera app on the social network Weibo, it has become known that the flagship will feature technology that is still rare in the industry.

Judging by the images of the camera interface, the smartphone will be equipped with a system known as “Leica 200MP continuous optical zoom.” This implies the implementation of continuous optical zoom ranging from 3x to 4.3x (focal lengths from 70 to 100 mm). Unlike its predecessor, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, where intermediate values between two fixed telephoto lenses were achieved through cropping, the new model will use movable optics to maintain maximum image quality throughout the zoom range.

Such technology is still exotic in the market. Previously, it was actively developed by Sony in the Xperia lineup (models 1 IV and 1 VII). However, Xiaomi plans to go further by combining this mechanism with a massive sensor-a 200-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL HPE optical format 1/1.4 inch-which should provide unprecedented detail and shooting flexibility.

In addition to the innovative zoom, the leak confirms the presence of a new 1-inch main sensor and the use of Leica APO optics. The official premiere of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will take place just next week. According to official data, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will be more expensive than the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, with a price not yet disclosed but expected to reflect its advanced features.

This move places Xiaomi squarely in competition with Sony and its Xperia line. The Xperia, known for its exceptional camera capabilities, offers unique features such as real-time tracking and eye autofocus, which enhance its photography experience. The upcoming Xiaomi model, with its technological advancements, could set new benchmarks, challenging Sony and possibly even overtaking its position in certain aspects of mobile photography.
