BYD: Racing Past Milestones and Unveiling Megawatt Charging

The largest Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD announced the release of its 15-millionth new energy vehicle (NEV). The milestone car is a six-seater SUV, the N8L of the premium brand DENZA. Production took place at BYD’s factory in the city of Jinan, which began mass production three years ago. NEV includes both electric vehicles (BEV) and Super Hybrid models with DM (Dual Mode) technology.

The first BYD electric car, the F3DM hybrid, rolled off the assembly line in 2008. It took the company 13 years to produce the first million NEVs, but increased volumes and product popularity allowed it to reach 15 million in just 13 months. The 14-millionth NEV was produced on October 9.

During the first 11 months of 2025, BYD produced 4.182 million vehicles, 11.3% more than the same period last year. Overseas sales reached 917,000 units, exceeding the total for all of 2024. The company is represented in more than 110 countries and regions.

In the first three quarters of 2025, BYD invested in research and development 43.75 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately $6 billion, which is 31% more than a year earlier. The total volume of investments in research and development exceeded 220 billion yuan, about $30 billion.

The company plans to introduce the Megawatt Flash Charging technology in Europe in 2026. This cutting-edge charging method is anticipated to dramatically reduce charging times, potentially posing stiff competition to current facilities.

Further cementing its global footprint, BYD is expanding its manufacturing presence with new facilities in Indonesia and Mexico, expected to bolster its production capabilities and market accessibility. Recent European emissions regulations have intensified competition, urging automakers to innovate. BYD’s strategic adjustments to these regulations underscore its commitment to sustainability and advancement.

Additionally, exchange rate updates: the conversion rate for 43.75 billion yuan is currently about $6 billion, while 26.65 billion euros translate roughly to $28 billion.
