BMW’s Year of the Horse Edition Spurs Excitement with Bold New Models

BMW has released official images of the limited edition BMW X5 – Year of the Horse Limited Edition. This vehicle is part of a major campaign marking 2026 as a symbolic ‘big year’ for the brand, where BMW, Mini, and BMW Motorrad plan to launch about 20 new or updated models in China. In addition to the X5, special ‘horse’ editions will be available for the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, and the BMW X3 crossover.

The special edition X5 stands out with its unique body color – Matte Sapphire Blue. The look is enhanced with an anti-chrome package: a black radiator grille with Iconic Glow lighting, black exhaust system pipes, and large 22-inch black alloy wheels with double spokes.

The interior of the limited X5 has been transformed into an art object inspired by Chinese culture. The seats are upholstered in Sensafin synthetic leather in a vibrant ‘Volcanic Red’ color. Golden thresholds and exclusive embroidery on the headrests reflect the imagery of ‘divine horses’ found in Dunhuang cave murals. The logo depicting a galloping horse is meant to convey a spirit of speed and strength.

The limited BMW X5 will be available with two types of ‘mild hybrid’ powertrains. The base version – with a power of 258 hp based on a 2.0-liter engine, and the top version – with a power of 381 hp based on a 3.0-liter inline ‘six’. Both engines are paired with a classic 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system.

In recent developments, BMW’s strategy in China heavily focuses on hybrid technology, which is gaining popularity among Chinese consumers due to its efficiency and lower emissions. This aligns with China’s push towards more environmentally friendly vehicles. Analysts expect BMW’s hybrid models to significantly boost sales in the region, citing a growing preference for innovative hybrids that combine power and sustainability.
