Popular accessory manufacturer for iPhones, Belkin, has announced a recall of three of its products, including the Belkin Auto-Tracking Stand Pro, Belkin BoostCharge USB-C PD Power Bank 20K, and Playa USB-C PD Power Bank 20K. The charging stand and both power banks were sold in black, while the Playa model was also available in white. The affected devices were sold on Belkin’s website and through third-party retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.
Belkin asserts that a manufacturing defect can lead to overheating of the lithium batteries within the devices, potentially causing fires and burns to consumers. Recall information is also available on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.
An estimated 83,500 units were sold in the U.S. and 2,385 in Canada, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) does not account for international sales. One fire was reported in the U.S. and 15 incidents abroad. Two individuals sustained minor burns, and there was property damage outside the U.S. totaling $37,765.
Owners of the affected models should cease using the device, unplug it, and contact Belkin. Safe storage in a dry place away from flammable materials and items that might damage the power bank is advised. They should not be disposed of in trash or recycling bins.
Belkin offers a full refund or store credit, requesting copies of receipts and proof of ownership. A picture of the product with its serial number is required. With a receipt, the purchase price will be reimbursed. Without a receipt, Belkin will offer the average sale price for the model.
Amid this recall, it’s worth noting that the power bank industry is moving towards safer technologies. The integration of safety features like advanced thermal sensors and auto-shutoff capabilities is becoming more commonplace, a necessary shift in response to past incidents.
