At the Guangzhou Auto Show, the premiere of the updated BAW 212 Explorer 01 showcased a pickup created based on the upgraded 212 T01, significantly reworked in appearance and features. This model revives the legendary BJ212, sharing its roots with the Russian UAZ. Designers retained the recognizable proportions while giving the vehicle a contemporary look with a more complex body curvature.
The completely new front features an original grille enclosing the round lighting, attracting special attention. The utilitarian style of the side with straight doors and square mirrors, coupled with a substantial tailgate and redesigned bumper with a step, accentuates practicality.
With a length exceeding 5.4 meters (17 feet 8 inches), a width of nearly 2 meters (6 feet 6 inches), and a height of about 2 meters (6 feet 6 inches), the wheelbase spans 3.5 meters (11 feet 6 inches). The major innovation lies under the hood-Explorer 01 is equipped with a 2.3-liter Dongfeng turbo diesel engine delivering 190 horsepower, developed in collaboration with Delphi. This engine, also found in the Chery Rely R08, aligns with current trends emphasizing fuel efficiency and performance.
The maximum speed is 160 km/h (99 mph), typical for diesel versions like the 212 T01. This feature positions the vehicle keenly in emerging markets where diesel efficiency is prized.
The BAW 212 Explorer 01 is emerging at a time when market trends lean heavily towards powerful yet efficient models that blend classic design elements with modern technology-a move that appeals to both nostalgic enthusiasts and new-age consumers looking for reliable options. As the automotive landscape evolves, manufacturers leveraging heritage designs with innovative technologies often see refreshed engagement from a diverse consumer base.
