A couple of years ago, Microsoft introduced the Azure Cobalt 100 processor, developed in-house based on Arm architecture. Today, the company announced the second generation – Azure Cobalt 200.
The new model continues to rely on Arm architecture and is aimed at the company’s cloud servers. Performance has increased by 1.5 times compared to the first generation, with the number of cores growing from 128 to 132. This involves Arm Neoverse V3 cores. Additionally, each chip includes 192 MB of third-level cache and 3 MB of second-level cache per core.
Microsoft highlights that each core of the new processor can operate at different performance levels, ensuring high energy efficiency. These chips are manufactured using a 3 nm process technology. According to the press release, Microsoft applied a unique approach by modeling more than 140 real scenarios of the Azure platform and employing AI-based simulation to evaluate over 350,000 configuration options before finalizing the architecture. This allowed the creation of a processor perfectly suited for Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure tasks.
