At CES 2026, VideoLAN showcased an ordinary laptop running the new AV2 codec. The PC ran a video utilizing this codec, played through the VLC 4.0 player. This event marked the first public demonstration of such functionality.
This version of the player is still under development, but it’s now clear that it will be compatible with the new codec. AV2 is set to replace AV1, improving compression while remaining free for manufacturers.
Currently, the codec is not yet complete. Its implementation is expected this year, though there are not yet processors or GPUs on the market with AV2 hardware acceleration. However, recent industry rumblings suggest that several leading tech companies are exploring the development of AV2-capable hardware, anticipating a rollout aligned with the codec’s official release.
Previously, VideoLAN conducted surveys among companies regarding AV1 and AV2. The feedback highlighted AV1’s importance and AV2’s potential. Notably, industry experts have pointed out the codec’s ability to significantly reduce data usage and enhance video quality, setting a new standard in digital broadcasting.
Looking ahead, the integration of AV2 into streaming platforms could revolutionize the way we consume media, enhancing both quality and efficiency. As these developments unfold, the tech community remains abuzz with the possibilities AV2 introduces to digital media environments.
