Apple’s Game of Timing: iPhone Air 2 Waits in the Wings

Apple is conducting internal tests of the second-generation iPhone Air, but the final release date for the device is yet to be determined. The potential postponement of the launch is under consideration due to the first generation’s sales in China not meeting the company’s expectations. In the first 12 days of sales, the iPhone Air achieved a distribution of just over 100,000 units in China, significantly below Apple’s forecasts.

The subdued demand has resulted in only one of China’s top five manufacturers pursuing the development of its own slim flagship smartphone, emphasizing its lightweight body and compact screen. Initially, the release of such a smartphone was planned for the first quarter of 2026, but the schedule may shift.

It remains unclear whether the iPhone Air 2 could see its debut next fall. Apple might revise the design and specifications of the model to heighten interest in the lineup and reinforce its position in the thin smartphone segment. Previously, The Information reported that Apple informed its employees and suppliers about canceling prior plans for the Air 2, which foresaw a release in the fall of 2026.

In response to market trends, Apple is exploring enhancements that appeal to consumer interest in sustainability and innovative tech features. The second-generation iPhone Air might include eco-friendly materials or new technological capabilities to align with growing global expectations.

Globally, the slim smartphone market is showcasing a trend towards greater efficiency and multiple functionalities in smaller form factors, a development Apple’s design team is likely considering as they refine the iPhone Air 2.
