Apple has unveiled its extensive use of 3D printing in manufacturing several of its devices. In this generation, the casings for all Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the titanium version of Watch Series 11 are created through three-dimensional printing. According to the company, these are made from 100% recycled titanium powder used in the aerospace industry. Apple previously considered such large-scale production impossible.
The Cupertino giant speaks of reduced waste and direct benefits. 3D printing technology uses almost precisely the amount of material needed for each item, generating no excess. Apple claims it now produces twice as many casings from the same amount of material as before. According to Apple’s estimates, this new process will save over 400 tons of raw titanium this year. The company also shares production details. Each 3D printer is equipped with a galvanometer with six lasers working simultaneously, creating layer by layer – more than 900 layers – to complete one casing.
Additionally, Apple implements this method to produce the USB-C port for iPhone Air. This too has a titanium casing, manufactured using the same technique.
Apple’s 3D printing technology reflects a breakthrough in their pursuit of sustainability, having reportedly reduced carbon emissions by 40% in their latest production changes. Industry experts anticipate further deployment of this model in future devices, potentially including MacBooks, where durability and weight are crucial factors. An Apple representative indicated that the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility remains a top priority, guiding innovations across all product lines. Expect to see ongoing developments in how 3D printing enhances design flexibility and minimizes the ecological footprint.
