The latest research by the University of Mississippi reveals that while Apple Watch excels in tracking heart rate and steps, it significantly falters in calorie counting, with an error margin of nearly 30%. This inaccuracy suggests that the device’s calorie measurements may not be reliable for assessing real energy expenditure.
Apple Watch remains a leading choice among wearable health devices. Analyzing data from 56 studies, researchers found the device’s heart rate tracking error was just 4.43%, and its step count accuracy had an error of 8.17%. These percentages are within acceptable limits for consumer gadgets.
However, the study highlighted a 27.96% error in calorie counting, far exceeding acceptable thresholds. This discrepancy was consistent across different Apple Watch models and user activities. Eric Shaffer, one of the study’s authors, emphasized the importance of using wearables as motivational tools rather than sources of definitive medical data. Calorie counts, in particular, should be seen as a rough guide.
Similar inaccuracies have been shown in other independent studies, pointing to a systemic issue in consumer fitness gadgets. Notwithstanding, these devices improve yearly. Apple has continually refined its algorithms, enhancing tracking precision without claiming the watches as medical devices. The company introduces new health features, including body temperature monitoring and sleep apnea detection, while refining existing ones.
Researchers, including co-author Jennifer Ross, stress their aim isn’t to discredit wearables but highlight current limitations. Such insights are pivotal for developers striving to enhance technology, benefiting both everyday users and healthcare professionals.
