On the SpaceX test range in McGregor, an unusual incident with a Raptor engine was observed. As reported by observer Thomas Hayden, during one of the evening tests, an explosion occurred at an extremely unusual moment – right at the launch stage. He noted that explosions at this stage had not happened before:
“It happened right during the start – a timing we had never observed before.”

The causes of the incident are still unknown. Thomas Hayden emphasizes that such events at McGregor do not always indicate a malfunction: the site is regularly used for tests “to destruction” to determine the limits of the structure. However, he did not rule out a technical problem either, noting that this Raptor might have indeed been “unhappy with something.”
SpaceX traditionally does not comment on individual test-firings of single Raptor engines. These engines are expected to be used for the next generation Starship, the launch of which is expected next year.
Raptor Engine Developments
Recently, SpaceX has made significant advancements with the Raptor engines, focusing on increasing their efficiency and reliability. These upgrades are crucial for the successful deployment of the Starship, which aims to revolutionize interplanetary travel.
Future of Starship
The upcoming launch of Starship, planned for next year, is set to mark a milestone in commercial space travel. SpaceX is working on streamlining the design and testing processes, ensuring that all systems, especially the Raptor engines, meet the rigorous demands of space exploration. The Raptor explosion, while unusual, provides valuable data that could enhance the overall safety and performance of SpaceX’s ambitious projects.
