AMD Ventures into Unclaimed Territory with Ryzen AI 400

AMD has unveiled the Ryzen AI 400 mobile processors today, and it turns out they aren’t only mobile. This line will also exist in the desktop segment. As of now, details are sparse, but this was noted on one of the promotional posters. The company states that these will be the first desktop processors for Copilot+ PC. Remember, only computers equipped with an NPU unit with a performance of at least 40 TOPS qualify for this category. The new AMD APUs boast a performance of 50-60 TOPS, depending on the model.

Intriguingly, despite the Copilot+ PC category nearing its second anniversary, neither AMD nor Intel have released desktop processors that meet the NPU requirement yet. It’s uncertain what the new models will be called, but possibly Ryzen 400G or Ryzen AI 400G. Historically, all previous generations of Ryzen G have also been mobile chips transferred to the desktop segment, so AMD could have named them Ryzen 9000G. However, it seems the company wants to retain the Ryzen AI brand and introduce it to the desktop segment for the first time.

Introducing the “fastest gaming processor.” Ryzen 7 9850X3D is 27% faster than Core Ultra 9 285K

It should be noted that technically, Ryzen AI 400 fully mirrors Ryzen AI 300, only with higher frequencies and slightly more powerful iGPU in one of the models. Regardless, the lineup offers up to 12 CPU cores and an iGPU up to Radeon 890M. These CPUs are expected to hit the market in the second quarter.

This announcement places AMD in a strategic position within the AI processor market, breaking new ground ahead of its notable competitor, Intel, who has yet to announce a similar offering. The shift signifies AMD’s emphasis on integrating AI capabilities across its processor range, promising insights into the company’s future direction in merging traditional and AI computing power.
