AMD Quietly Reintroduces Last-Gen Tech with a Hint of AI Ambitions

Without much fanfare, AMD has expanded its lineup of professional graphics cards with a model from the previous generation, introducing the Radeon Pro W7900D.

Interestingly, this is almost the same as the Radeon Pro W7900, albeit with slightly reduced parameters. This partial downgrading might be driven by potential supplies to China. The Radeon Pro W7900D is distinguished from the usual version only by reduced GPU frequencies: from 2500 to 2156 MHz, which is noticeable but not critical. However, everything else remains unchanged: the same 6144 stream processors and 48 GB of memory. Recently, the industry has witnessed a shift towards AI integration in graphics processing, with GPUs increasingly supporting AI-driven applications.

The latest GPUs from various manufacturers, including AMD’s competitors, are focusing on better AI performance, efficiency in processing AI workloads, and enhancing machine learning capabilities. Analysts suggest that the AI Pro series aims to cater to these rising demands for AI-centric tasks in graphics technology.

“The key differentiator for modern GPUs is how well they handle AI workloads,” said an industry expert. “AMD’s step into AI-specialized GPUs is a clear indication of aligning with future demands.”

In addition, two new models are mentioned in the Linux driver but have yet to be listed on the website. These are the AI Pro 9600D and AI Pro 9700S. As we can see, even the names are somewhat different, and the presence of the abbreviation AI suggests these innovations are targeted at artificial intelligence. What’s more, these names imply that they are at least cards from the current generation.
