Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Edges Closer to Powering Turkey

On the first unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, a key stage in connecting to Turkey’s national power grid has been completed-the installation of block transformers in their design positions. These transformers are meant to convert the 24 kV voltage generated by the turbogenerator to 400 kV, facilitating the transmission of energy to the distribution device. Each transformer weighs 283 tonnes and boasts a capacity of 533,000 kVA.

The General Director of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, Sergey Butckikh, emphasized that the transformers are the main element of the power unit’s power delivery system. Specialists are now installing high-voltage inputs, cooling, monitoring, and control systems. The next stages will see the installation of additional equipment and electric routes, alongside configuring protection and fire-extinguishing systems. Before final connection, the transformers will undergo a series of high-voltage tests.

Once the work is complete, the energy produced by the turbogenerator will enter Turkey’s integrated power system, ensuring stable electricity supply in the region. Akkuyu will be Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, featuring four power units equipped with 3+ generation VVER reactors, each having a capacity of 1,200 MW. It was previously reported that the reactor is 99% complete.

This significant development comes amidst Turkey’s broader energy diversification strategy aimed at reducing dependency on imported energy sources. The Akkuyu project, in collaboration with Rosatom, also reflects geopolitical ties and strategic energy collaborations with Russia.
