On November 15, the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi (UAE) hosted the launch of the second season of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) – a series where artificial intelligence pilots autonomous race cars. The inaugural season was held here on April 27, 2024. A2RL brings together university teams developing algorithms for standardized autonomous platforms, following the traditions of projects like the Indy Autonomous Challenge.
Before the actual races, teams competed in the virtual A2RL SIM-Sprint stage. The four-race series concluded in September 2024 with Kinetiz clinching victory, amassing 78 points and outpacing last year’s champions from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) by 4 points. The top three also included Unimore Racing and PoliMOVE. Competitions took place on digital replicas of the Suzuka Circuit, Yas Marina, and a unique virtual track called the Autonodrome.
“SIM-Sprint was a vital stage for A2RL’s development,” said Alexander Winkler, the league’s sports director. “We created a competitive environment for refining AI and the sports format.”
This season, teams utilize the upgraded EAV-25 car – a modification of last year’s EAV-24 model. The vehicle reaches speeds up to 295 km/h (183 mph) and features enhanced safety, reliability, and powertrain systems. Key innovations include reinforced batteries with emergency mode systems, a hydraulic braking system for reduced stopping distances, and dampers that minimize vibrations. The car is 50 kg lighter due to optimized design. The season’s main innovation is simultaneous drone races.
“Simultaneous racing is the most complex aspect,” explained Ayoub Rajji from Team Unimove. “We need not only to enhance algorithms but also to prioritize scenarios based on likelihood.”
Yash Katare, a technical expert from A2RL partner Aspire, added:
“Six cars on the track introduce a fundamentally new dynamic. Teams are learning to make decisions in milliseconds.”
A2RL serves as a testing ground for autonomous technology in extreme conditions. Successes in these races are expected to accelerate AI’s integration into commercial transport, improving its safety and efficiency. The event is streamed live on the league’s website.
