AI in Law Enforcement: A Sketchy Situation?

It seems that artificial intelligence might significantly alter yet another aspect of our lives, specifically, a part of the police force’s professional activities. Reportedly, the police in the USA have begun using AI to generate composite sketches. In November, after a shooting incident in a suburb of Phoenix, the local police released a composite image of the suspect with a note that it was AI-generated. Unlike traditional drawings, this composite was more akin to an actual photograph.

This AI-generated composite was created similarly to conventional ones, but with the aid of artificial intelligence. The police officer responsible for creating these sketches shared that he started using AI back in April and was astonished by how realistic the results were. The officer also mentioned that such composites significantly attract more attention from the public. People are highly responsive to visual information, which is why this approach works so well.

However, both cases in which these AI-generated composites were used remain unsolved. Despite the initial success in generating attention, this points to a broader issue surrounding the technology’s adoption in law enforcement: the accuracy and ethical implications. The discussion in law enforcement and tech circles continues as experts weigh the potential benefits, such as resource efficiency and heightened public engagement, against the risks, including privacy concerns and the potential for misuse.

Recent advances in AI technology have made it possible to generate sketches with uncanny accuracy, rooted in sophisticated algorithms capable of learning and recognizing facial features far more precisely than traditional methods. As more police departments explore AI’s capabilities, projections suggest an expansion in AI applications within law enforcement tasks. Nonetheless, experts warn about the ethical considerations and stress the need for robust guidelines to prevent misidentification and ensure impartiality in AI’s law enforcement roles.
