In this year, monitors featuring new OLED panels from both Samsung and LG are entering the market. Samsung has now unveiled another new development, called QD-OLED Penta-Tandem. As the name suggests, it is the same QD-OLED technology, but the matrix now consists of five layers. More specifically, Samsung Display increased the number of blue-emitting layers from four to five and used the latest organic materials to create the next generation of QD-OLED.
According to the manufacturer, compared to the four-layer version, Penta-Tandem increases luminance by 1.3 times and doubles the lifespan. The respective monitors can offer a peak brightness of 4500 cd/m² for televisions and 1300 cd/m² for monitors. These are the figures for the 3% OPR scenario, meaning when a maximum of 3% of the pixels in the entire matrix are active.

It’s worth noting that although the technology was only announced now, Samsung had actually introduced panels based on it at the end of last year and at the beginning of this year. These include the 27-inch 4K UHD panel, the 32-inch 4K UHD panel, and the 34-inch WQHD panel. Additionally, the technology will be applied in the 49-inch Dual QHD model (5120×1440). Television panels of this generation are also already shipped to the market and partners.
The Innovations Behind Samsung’s QD-OLED Penta-Tandem
Samsung’s latest Penta-Tandem technology reveals an aggressive push into higher performance standards, particularly targeting avid gamers and digital professionals seeking unparalleled graphics. The innovative five-layer design not only extends the panel’s lifetime but also enhances brightness, aligning with optimal performance settings crucial for competitive gaming and creative work.
Expected Impact and Market Response
Industry experts predict that the QD-OLED Penta-Tandem panels will set a new benchmark in display technologies by delivering enhanced contrast and vibrant colors without the risk of burn-in, a common issue with OLEDs. These advancements are expected to persuade both existing and new customers to consider switching to Samsung’s latest offerings in pursuit of superior viewing experiences.
Besides the technological advancements, Samsung’s persistent commitment to innovation continues to bolster its reputation as a leader in display technology, setting a tough challenge for competitors like LG and Sony to match the new standards.
