Ferrari’s Leap into the Future: Johnny Ive and the Electric Luce Interior

LoveFrom, the company founded by former Apple chief designer Johnny Ive, has crafted the interior design for Ferrari’s upcoming first electric vehicle. The model is called the Luce, and the Italian company itself revealed its interior, which indeed contrasts significantly with what can be seen in other Ferrari cockpits.

The interior looks minimalist and rounded, yet it features numerous intricate details. Three main elements stand out in the cabin: the steering wheel with instrument panel, the swivel screen with a cluster of buttons, and the central console with a gear shifter.

The design combines modern technology with a touch of retro. For instance, the front panel is comprised of three screens, yet they are fashioned as if they were classic instruments. The panel itself appears as though it has been directly transferred from half a century old cars.

The large swivel screen hardly resembles anything else in vehicles. The housing is almost square and it vaguely resembles a separate portable electronic device like a tablet. It has analog controls and even mechanical clocks.

Throughout the cabin, there are about 40 elements made of Corning Gorilla Glass, from the gear lever casing to slightly convex instrument panel lenses. Even the electronic key is special. Its front panel houses a large color E Ink screen with the Ferrari logo on a yellow background. However, when the key is inserted into the console slot, the screen dims, symbolizing the transfer of energy from the key to the car.

This interior design sets a new benchmark in the automotive industry by blending cutting-edge technology with a nostalgic twist, maintaining a balance that attracts both tech enthusiasts and classic car lovers. As electric vehicles gain prominence, Ferrari’s approach of merging traditional elements with modern innovations may influence future design trends.
