Microsoft is officially pulling its mobile application, Microsoft Lens, from the App Store and Google Play today. Users who have the app installed on their devices can continue using it to scan documents until March 9, 2026, after which they can only view previously saved documents but will no longer create new scans. Reinstallation will not be possible, and users can only rely on their existing installations.
Originally named Office Lens and launched in 2014 for Windows Phone, it was later made available on Android and iOS and subsequently rebranded as Microsoft Lens. Now, the application is reaching the end of its journey.
Microsoft suggests users shift to the OneDrive app, which already includes integrated scanning features. In line with Microsoft’s strategic aim to create a more interconnected ecosystem under its cloud services such as OneDrive and Microsoft 365 apps, the removal of Microsoft Lens seems aligned with this vision. OneDrive’s scanning capabilities offer enhanced security settings, integrated storage solutions, and seamless collaboration tools, which are reportedly well-received by numerous users.
Microsoft Lens boasted a 4.9 out of 5.0 rating on Google Play Store based on 971,000 reviews and had been downloaded 50 million times. Despite being well-loved, users have recently started voicing concerns over its requirements for authorization and the involuntary upload of personal files to work accounts.
