One of the most iconic SUVs in history, the Mitsubishi Pajero (known in the USA as the Montero and in the UK as the Shogun), is officially preparing for a triumphant return. Spy photographers have captured the disguised prototype of this new model during testing in Europe. The model is set to become a direct competitor to the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 and the Lexus GX.

The prototype has a large vertical grille, angular LED optics, and widened wheel arches. Despite earlier rumors suggesting that the Pajero might be a copy of the new Nissan Patrol, current data indicates an independent development by Mitsubishi. The SUV will be built on a modernized ladder frame chassis from the Mitsubishi Triton (L200) pickup.

Under the hood, a 2.4-liter twin-turbo diesel engine with 201 hp is expected (like the pickup). Also, the likelihood is high for a hybrid version (PHEV) based on Outlander technology, but with a more powerful power unit. The new Pajero will have an advanced all-wheel drive system with seven driving modes for various types of surfaces.

A full global debut is planned for the summer of 2026, with sales in most countries beginning in early 2027. The new Pajero will take the flagship position in the brand’s lineup.
