In the residence of a former top manager of TSMC, who moved to work for Intel, confidential documents related to the advanced technological processes being developed by TSMC were found. He now faces criminal prosecution. Earlier this year, Intel conducted a ‘hunt’ for former senior vice president of TSMC, Wei-Jen Lo, eventually hiring him but also receiving a lawsuit from TSMC. The latter feared that Lo could transfer a significant amount of critical information to Intel. As part of the initiated investigation, a search was conducted at Lo’s residence in Taiwan, and confidential documents were indeed discovered and confiscated. Following this, the court approved the seizure of Lo’s shares and real estate, the value of which, according to expert estimates, exceeds $640 million.

Lo is also a U.S. citizen and resides there, making it challenging to swiftly bring him to justice in his homeland. In response, TSMC has already notified its relevant supply chain partners about the situation and has completely changed the project code names of its advanced technology development programs to prevent further access to internal secrets related to these processes.
Recent developments bring to light serious cybersecurity concerns in the semiconductor industry. With rising tensions, companies are more cautious about protecting their intellectual property. The situation stresses the critical importance of safeguarding sensitive information.
According to market analysts, TSMC continues to hold a formidable position within the global semiconductor landscape, being a leader in chip manufacturing with major clients like Apple, Nvidia, and AMD. Meanwhile, Intel has been undergoing a transformation, striving to regain dominance after facing stiff competition from companies in Taiwan and South Korea.
The ongoing legal battle underscores the complexity of intellectual property laws that multinational corporations must navigate. These issues often involve intricate cross-jurisdictional challenges, highlighting the delicate balance between legal frameworks in different nations.
