According to The Korea Economic Daily, Samsung is developing its own graphics processor, which is set to debut in the Exynos 2800 SoC (working title).
Currently, mid- and high-segment Exynos chips use Xclipse graphics cores based on AMD’s RDNA architecture. Transitioning to a fully proprietary design will allow Samsung to eliminate licensing restrictions, reduce dependency on partners, and gain full control over the introduction of new features and technologies.
The plan is for the new graphics processor to become a versatile platform, to be used across a wide range of devices: smart glasses, robots, automotive SoCs, and even specialized AI ASIC chips. This move could alter the competitive landscape, affecting companies like Qualcomm and Apple, which also specialize in proprietary SoCs.
Samsung’s initiative to develop its own GPU is not just a strategy for consumer electronics but also opens pathways into more specialized markets like artificial intelligence and automotive technology, further expanding their innovative reach and influence.
