The rapid increase in DRAM prices is set to significantly impact the technology market, but this is merely the beginning. For instance, Dell has updated its pricing in their configuration tool. Now, adding memory to a Dell XPS 13 costs more than upgrading a MacBook. Selecting a laptop that comes with 16 GB of LPDDR5X-8448 memory by default, you can choose to upgrade it to either 32 or 64 GB. In the first case, it costs $550, while the latter will set you back $950.

This means Dell has priced 16 GB of RAM at $550. For comparison, in the case of the new MacBook with an M4 chip, moving from 16 to 32 GB costs $400, and Apple had always been the most expensive in the market for memory upgrades.

Framework, a company specializing in modular PCs, has also taken note of the issue. In their configuration tool, the cost to upgrade from 16 GB to 32 GB is still $80, although they will likely reconsider their prices soon.
