BYD has launched sales of the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid in Japan, starting at 3,982,000 yen (approximately $26,700), instantly making it the most affordable PHEV crossover in the country. This is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid on the Japanese market, where the company debuted in 2023 with a lineup of electric vehicles. In Japan, the Sealion 6 slots between the Prius PHEV ($25,800) and the more expensive Toyota Harrier ($33,900) and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ($35,500), significantly winning in terms of price.

The crossover combines a hybrid powertrain and an electric motor, providing an electric driving range of about 100 kilometers (62 miles) in typical urban conditions (CLTC). A gasoline engine is available for longer trips. Fuel consumption is approximately 22.4 km per liter (52.7 miles per gallon), better than comparable hybrid crossovers. The vehicle is equipped with three millimeter-wave radars and a high-resolution camera to support driver assistance features.
To cater specifically to Japan, the model has improved vibration insulation, more comfortable rear seats, and even black alloy wheels – all per local customer demands. Additionally, BYD is already preparing to expand its lineup and aims to increase its market share in Japan. As per the latest data, BYD’s expansion strategy includes increasing collaborations with local dealerships and enhancing customer service support to strengthen its foothold in a competitive market.
