President of the United States Donald Trump has signed an executive order launching a project in the field of artificial intelligence, already drawing comparisons to the Manhattan Project. The latter pertained to the development of the first nuclear weapon. Genesis Mission A Created by Gemini, the new project is called the Genesis Mission. It is a national initiative to utilize artificial intelligence to transform scientific research methods and accelerate scientific discoveries.

The executive order tasks the Department of Energy with the creation of an enclosed experimental AI platform that will unite world-class supercomputers across the nation and unique data arrays to craft scientific foundational models and power robotic laboratories. Additionally, the Secretary of Energy is directed to leverage national laboratories to bring together the brightest minds in the US, the most powerful computers, and extensive scientific data into a single collaborative research system. Other departments have received their own directives.

Crafting AI Scientists

Put simply, the US aims to consolidate the efforts of numerous scientists, laboratories, and supercomputers, supplemented by vast scientific data sets, to achieve global goals and tackle problems that currently require excessive time. Furthermore, the project envisions the creation of AI agents to test new hypotheses, automate research processes, and expedite scientific breakthroughs. Essentially, the US aims to create something like AI scientists rather than merely using new tools on a larger scale.

The Genesis Mission will significantly hasten scientific discoveries, bolster national security, ensure energy dominance, boost labor productivity, and dramatically increase returns on taxpayer investments in research and development, thereby reinforcing America’s technological dominance and global strategic leadership.

The Mission will employ AI for automating experiments, designing and accelerating simulations, and creating predictive models for everything from protein folding to thermonuclear plasma dynamics. In future phases, developments are expected to further integrate AI into these systems, enhancing data processing capabilities and model precision.
