While globally AMD’s share in the desktop processor market does not even reach 30%, the DIY segment often tells a different story. According to fresh statistics from Germany’s largest retailer Mindfactory, the sales ratio is approximately 1 to 10.
To be exact, for the past week, there were 2,260 AMD processors sold compared to only 220 Intel CPUs. That means Intel barely captured 9% of the market share. In monetary terms, the share was slightly over 7%, as Intel’s average selling price was 243 euros ($261) while AMD’s was 307 euros ($330).
The gaming Ryzen X3D series are undeniable leaders. There were 680 units of Ryzen 7 9800X3D sold, and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D was purchased 350 times. Immediately after them comes the affordable Ryzen 5 7500F with 180 units sold. The best-selling Intel processor was the Core i5 14600K, with 20 units sold.
AMD’s Growing Momentum
Recent trends show that AMD’s market penetration in the DIY sector continues to grow, driven by its high-performance Ryzen X3D series, which are particularly favored by gaming enthusiasts for their superior speed and efficiency. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D, in particular, has received praise for its balance between processing power and energy consumption, making it a preferred choice among DIY builders.
Intel’s Challenges and Opportunities
On the other hand, Intel faces an uphill battle to regain its foothold. The company’s focus on artificial intelligence capabilities within its latest CPUs, like the Core i5 14600K, has not yet translated into substantial sales figures, though it offers unique features that can appeal to a niche tech-savvy audience. Intel is also banking on its upcoming generations to leverage improved performance metrics.
