Mozilla has announced a new feature for its Firefox browser called AI Window – an AI-powered space where users can interact with an AI assistant and get help while browsing the internet. Positioned as an “intelligent and user-controlled space,” this product is being developed openly with community involvement. The AI Window will be the third type of window in Firefox alongside the classic and private modes. Users will have the option to choose which AI model to use, although detailed options have yet to be disclosed.
The interface will enable a dialogue with the AI assistant, helping users search for information and analyze content. Mozilla emphasizes a fundamental difference in its approach: while other companies create AI systems that “keep users in a conversational loop,” Mozilla sees AI as a “reliable companion that helps find information faster and returns to the web, rather than isolating the user.”

Previously, in September, Mozilla already implemented one AI feature – a “shake to summarize” option in the mobile version of Firefox for iPhone. This function uses AI to generate brief summaries of open web pages. A notable aspect of this feature is its optionality: users decide whether and to what extent to use AI.
The development of AI Window is being conducted in an open format: Mozilla publishes updates and gathers feedback through the Mozilla Connect forum. The company is inviting interested users to join a waiting list to receive news on the development progress and participate in testing.
Recent Advancements and Community Engagement
Recently, Mozilla has focused on integrating AI features that enhance user control over their browsing experience. The company is actively engaging the community to refine these tools, aiming to safeguard user privacy while embracing innovative technology. This move aligns with their ethos of transparency and collaborative development.
Comparing AI-powered Browsing Experiences
In comparison, other browsers like Microsoft’s Edge and Google Chrome have also integrated AI functionalities. Edge, for instance, utilizes AI to enhance search capabilities and content recommendation, while Chrome explores AI for translation and content adaptation. Mozilla’s approach remains distinct with its strong emphasis on user control and community-driven improvements.
