United Airlines Faces Interference Issues with Starlink Internet on Flights
United Airlines’ ambitious plans to offer SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet on domestic flights have hit a snag. The airline has identified interference between Starlink terminals and the critical communication antennas used by pilots, causing static interruptions.
United Airlines began its free Starlink service in May, making it one of the few airlines offering in-flight satellite internet. At launch, the service promised high speed and stability, with plans to equip all domestic flights with Starlink by the end of 2025. Passengers welcomed the initiative for its potential to transform in-flight connectivity.
Temporary Suspension on Select Flights
Currently, United has temporarily suspended Starlink access on about twenty Embraer E175 aircraft to address the static interference issues. The airline assured passengers that this problem does not compromise flight safety. Each affected plane will undergo routine maintenance to resolve the issue, suggesting the service disruption is only temporary.
United Airlines remains committed to getting Starlink back online swiftly. A spokesperson stated, “We expect the service to be restored on these aircraft shortly.” Operations will continue without flight cancellations, ensuring passengers still reach their destinations while the problem is being fixed.
Moving Forward with Starlink
Despite the current setback, United Airlines does not intend to backtrack on its plans with Starlink. The company is focused on overcoming these technical challenges, eager to resume full access and transform passengers’ internet experience in-flight. As airlines continue to innovate, maintaining reliable communication remains a top priority.
