2nm Technology Race: TSMC vs Samsung and the Skyrocketing Costs

The transition to the 2nm process technology will inevitably lead to a rise in chip prices. In the case of TSMC, it seems that for some manufacturers, the price was excessively high. Reportedly, this particular manufacturer chose Samsung as an alternative. Insider Fixed Focus Digital states that one of the tech giants, due to the exorbitant cost of TSMC’s new process, decided to produce its upcoming flagship chip using Samsung’s 2-nanometer GAA process. It’s worth recalling that the Exynos 2600 is also produced using this process. Photo WCCF Tech.

The specific company in question currently remains unknown. There were previous rumors that Qualcomm would use Samsung as an alternative to TSMC, but not as a replacement. In this case, it might concern MediaTek. Previously, it was reported that the price of a 300mm wafer with 2nm chips at TSMC and Samsung is approximately $30,000 and $20,000 ($20,000) respectively.

Notably, the semiconductor industry is experiencing a period of rapid innovation, with TSMC and Samsung at the forefront of this technological race. Their competition in the 2nm process signifies a new era of power-efficient and high-performing microchips. For companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek, choosing between TSMC and Samsung involves strategic decisions, balancing cost and technological advantage.

Additionally, recent developments highlight ongoing discussions about the global chip shortage, emphasizing the critical role these innovations play in meeting increasing demands. The deployment of 2nm technology is expected to significantly boost computing power across various sectors, from smartphones to cloud computing, driving economic growth and technological advancement.

Fixed Focus Digital has also shared details about the computer version of the HarmonyOS operating system, leaked photos of the new iPhone SE4, and renders of the Huawei Pocket 2. Additionally, it reported that Apple has discontinued its foldable iPhone project.
